His Fiancée Was the One Woman He’d Loved. Her Children Are All He Has Left. Reserved contractor Wade Sullivan never expected to fall in love with Starr Parnell or to love her three small kids as if they were his own. But that’s exactly what happened. As their wedding draws near, however, tragedy strikes–and Wade must put aside his own grief in order to help Starr’s children cope. As Wade focuses his efforts on caring for the children, he discovers that their tender, young lives give tremendous meaning to his own broken one. Then Starr’s abusive ex-husband shows up to claim the offspring who barely remember him–and Wade prepares for the fight of his life. A powerful novel of loss and discovery, courage and grace, A Nest of Sparrows masterfully illustrates one man’s struggle to know when to fight, when to let go, and when to simply wait. This novel was originally published in 2004 under the same title.

I agree with the reviewer who wrote "This book was one of the best I have read in a very long time." Yes, there was romance, but it was not center-stage. It is a story of life and its challenges. This was my first Deborah Raney book but certainly won't be my last!Product details

Deborah Raney provides all of this plus multi bestsellers to choose from, so that the reading fun doesn’t stop there! You are gonna love the writings of Deborah Raney. Grab it up and spread the word to your friends!
Reading this story about the ups and downs of a family rocked by the mother's death, months of foster parenting, and poor judicial decisions, plus all the intricacies of the legal and social work system was a roller coaster the three children were taken on!
The ultimate sacrifice, allowed by God, of giving up the children, turned two of the main characters into professing and praying Christians, who in God's time saw all their prayers peacefully answered with no hostility or confrontation.
This was an incredibly touching read that keeps you on a roller-coaster of emotion. The characters were real and believable, and the plot was exciting, full of twists and turns. It has you rooting for the good guys all the way through. I couldn't wait for the end to see how it would turn out. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves Christian fiction.
When the worst happens - that one thing you know you could never get through - and then it happens again - what do you do? What do you think? Do you sink into a despair so deep you never surface again? Do you lose hope in God, or at least the goodness of God? Wade Sullivan faces these questions.
Although the final outcome is never really in question, the twists and turns along the way are as compelling as the joy-filled, loving portrait of family we see in Wade and "his" kids.
Disclaimer This is a Christian book of hope. If you don't share that hope, you might not like the book...or it might just inspire you if you give it a chance.
I don't normally write reviews, although I am an avid reader. This book did prompt me to go out of my comfort zone to write a brief review. It deals with very difficult life circumstances, will cause you to shed a tear, but what a wonderful book. Don't miss out on this read by Deborah Raney. I have read many of her works and enjoyed all of them, but this was by far the best.
Story of a man engaged to a lovely woman with 3 kids. She dies in tragic circumstance (no spoiler, this is in most descriptions), the man seeks custody of the young children (I think Beau is supposed to be nine, the oldest). He struggles to provide, many struggles. Their love for one another is heartwarming. There is romance thrown in, but the centerpiece is his overwhelming loyalty to three children not of his blood. I really enjoyed it. It was obviously intended as a heartwarming story. I don't want to reveal the ending but, unlike most of real life, it is a tad unrealistic in the end. I have known, personally, too many stories of real heartbreak (two very close friends, not just distant stories, as well as a few who were personally known to me but not as close).
If I explained more, I feel I'd be spoiling the story. Characters of all, especially the main four, but even side characters and struggles are well fleshed out. One reviewer pointed out that the villain was a little too bad. Not sure I agree but some of his behavior seemed tiny bit stereotyped.
All in all well-written and uplifting.
A story of heartbreak, love and learning to trust God. A thirty-something couple w/3 kids are planning a wedding. Shortly before the wedding, she dies and the children are left with him. The kids birth-father shows up after 4 years of zero contract and the struggle ensues. Who really is Dad to these children? As the sordid history unfolds and is whitewashed, the reader is privileged to witness faith in action as a Wade lives his life and fights to become the permanent father of his beloved, deceased fiancées 3 children, one prayer at a time.
Fast paced dialogue and lots of quick, active scenes keep this 400+ page tome moving along at a rapid pace. Even tho’ it was lengthy, I found myself wanting more at the end. The characters were endearing and I’d love to visit with them again and play a game of spoons!
